Executive Presbyter
Gerry Tyer

Who I Am...

I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to a military family. I lived in Virginia, Georgia, Japan, Tennessee and Illinois prior to junior high school. Since 1991 I have served on the Presbytery staff. Before coming to Tampa Bay I served three pastorates in West Collingswood, New Jersey; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Columbus, Ohio.

My Doctor of ministry degree is from Boston University (in Administration), Princeton Seminary, Master of Theology (Counseling), Master of Divinity (Biblical Studies), and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Georgia (go Dogs!) My clinical training came from Trenton Psychiatric Hospital and Princeton Medical Center.

In 1968 Maxine Ryals and I were married. We have fourteen nieces and nephews, and two great-nieces spread from Hawaii to Massachusetts. Maxie is a math instructor at St. Petersburg Jr. College. We are both devotees of tropical gardening, and when time permits, I enjoy a round of golf.

I have received advanced training in the following areas:

  • conflict management with Speed Leas of the Alban Institute.

  • Effective Church strategic planning with Kennon Callahan.

  • church transformation with Paul Dietterich of the Center for Parish Development

  • conflict, Bridge Builder, and Healthy Congregation development with Peter Steinke

  • evangelism and Magnetic Church building with Herb Miller.

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator licenced administrator with Otto Kroeger Associates.

  • change management, organizational decision making, and team building with Del R. Poling Consulting International.

What I Do...

My responsibilities as Executive Presbyter includes spiritual and administrative oversight for the Presbytery. I enjoy helping pastor search committees, assisting sessions, and consulting with pastors and church leaders in the following areas:

  • long range planning and visioning,

  • mission studies and priority setting,

  • evangelism and church growth,

  • change management,

  • stewardship and financial planning,

  • conflict and crisis management,
